Self Worth
Where does my worth come from?
Is it in strength? beauty? intellect? athleticism? money?. Is your worth rooted in any of these? If it is,
it's a fleeting worth. A very fragile worth indeed. One car accident can remove every one of these
identities
in an instant. Then what value would you be?
No, thanks to God, our worth is one declared outside of ourselves, independent of humanity, and secure far
beyond the reaches of the status quo. Your worth is one declared and set by your Creator, the One who made
you.
And He began making your worth known when after five days of speaking all of creation into being. He paused
to take time on you, humanity. He formed us with His own hands, made us in His own image, gave life to us
with His
own breath, and when His justice called for our due punishment, He redeemed us with His own blood.
A beautiful statement of worth,
I'd say!
That statement wasn't made because we are special, valuable or worthy of it. Our value has nothing to do
with us
and quite everything to do with him. He loves the unlovable, forgives the unforgiveable, values the
unvaluable, declares worth over the unworthy. You see, our worth is established by something outside of
ourselves and completely unreliant on ourselves or anybody else.
Our worth is determined and held secure by the Indestructible Being that sustains all life. His price tag on
us is one of unfathomable cost.
The problem is do we know it?
- ...The heart of the wicked is of little value (Proverbs 10:20) And yet...
- For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16
- Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. - Luke 12:6-7
- So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. - Genesis 1:27
- For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. - Psalms 139:13-16
...at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)
We are the valueless wicked hearts that are valued.
